Meccano Cliff Railway
by Graham Page

A model based on the Funicular Railway described in the 1935 Set 7 manual.

A sturdier construction and reduced width for a more realistic look. Sprocket chain was abandoned in favour of 'winch cables'.

The passenger cars are pretty much as in the original plan with some extra plating. The insulated fish plate activates the auto-stop switch at the bottom of the track.

Under track view - each car has its own winch cable connected to the winding gear but they are also connected by a third cable that ensures they move in unison.

The upper platform is modelled to a minimum extent. A five-hole braced girder was cut into two to complete the fencing at the front.

The lower platform is a similar fenced structure mounted above the winding gear. It includes a tempting looking operating lever that controls the actions of the model.

Two auto-stop switches are formed from 1” wiper arms and 3-hole narrow strips. Two winding drums share a common axle but wind in opposite directions.

The operating lever rotates two insulated bush wheels. One carries two contact studs and selects which auto-stop switch power is supplied through. The 2nd forms a 2 pole changeover switch that reverses the direction of the motor.
